Bamboo Scrimber’s Physical and Mechanical Properties in Comparison to Four Structural Timber Species

Bamboo scrimber is a sustainable engineered material that overcomes natural round bamboo’s various weaknesses. This study compared the bamboo scrimber’s mechanical (strength, stiffness, and ductility) to timber. The results showed physical properties are comparable, even superior, wood, especially in compression. Scrimber has higher density than Its drier equilibrium moisture content indicates more hydrophobic timbers. maximum crushing strength (?c//), compressive stress perpendicular-to-fiber at proportional limit (?cp?) 0.04” deformation (?c0.04?), shear (?//), longitudinal modulus of elasticity (Ec//), lateral (Ec?), rigidity (G) those Both timber’s flexural (modulus rupture (?b) (Eb)) comparable. On contrary, tensile parallel-to-fiber (?t//) weaker high ductility (? > 6) when subjected compression perpendicular-to-fiber, medium (4 < ? ? parallel-to-fiber, low (brittle) bending, shear, or parallel-to-fiber. may give an alarm time before failure Timbers have brittle lower receiving each kind loading scheme. ratio (G/?) (EC?/?C?) strongly correlates with ratio. However, (Eb/?b) Young (Ec?/?cp?) do not correlate value.
